Light Switch Repair

Flickering lights or switches that don't respond properly indicate wiring issues that need immediate attention. We'll identify the root cause and fix it.

Chapter 01

Flicker, buzz, or a switch that does nothing

A switch is a mechanical part sitting in a box full of live wire. It gets thrown thousands of times, and the contacts inside pit and loosen. A light that steadies when you tap the wall plate is a classic sign. So are a mushy click, a warm plate, a hum, or a fixture that works from one switch position only. These aren't quirks to live with.

Arcing inside a switch box is heat, and heat in a wall full of wood is a problem. The likely suspects are a worn device, a loose wire at a terminal, a missing or loose neutral behind a dimmer or smart switch, and a dimmer that doesn't match the bulbs. Guessing and swapping parts gets tiresome fast and still leaves the flicker.

Test it, rewire it, then replace what's worn

Justin Zimmerman confirms power with a tester, then opens the box and looks. A discolored terminal, brittle insulation, or a loose wire nut tells the story quickly. He checks that the neutral is where a dimmer or smart switch expects it, and that the travelers are landed correctly when two switches run one light.

Then he fixes the connection, not just the device. Worn contacts get a new switch. Bad terminations are cut back and remade. In an older house around Athens where the box is cramped, he dresses the wiring so no conductor is pinched against the frame when the switch goes back in.

Chapter 03

Picking the right switch the second time

Not every dimmer works with every bulb. LED lamps need a dimmer rated for them, or they flicker, buzz, or never turn fully off. A 3-way circuit needs a 3-way device, and a dimmer on a 3-way needs one built for it. Justin matches the device to the load, so a Mabank living room or tray ceiling doesn't hum at night.

He'll tell you what he found and what he'd leave alone. If a switch plate stays warm or the flicker comes back, call (903) 218-3632. The repair comes with a five-year labor warranty, so the labor on that fix stays covered if something isn't right.
